Western Sharpshooters, 66th Illinois, Co. D

Reenactors portraying the Civil War sharpshooters and skirmish companies that were armed with state of the art target and repeating rifles.

Black Squirrel Arsenal & Armory

The Black Squirrel Arsenal & Armory was founded because we were tired of seeing reenactors, including ourselves, getting ripped off by shoddy gunsmiths and buying questionable blanks. We have seen the Henry conversions in which poor workmanship has led to other parts of the rifle being damaged, Spencers being damaged by a blank's unsized brass case and plastic blanks getting stuck in the chambers of both rifles.

The BSA&A will provide quality blanks and services at a reasonable cost for your Henry and Spencer; for those of you who don't want to spend the time or purchase the equipment to make your own blanks. Whichever route you choose, our goal is to assist the guys out there with their repeating rifles. Our actions are our proof that we are in this for the reenactor. We gave you our secret recipes for the Henry and Spencer blanks. How many "blank vendors" have done that.

We would rather see our fellow Henry and Spencer owners in the field using their repeaters and not just wallking around and looking pretty. Nothing is worse than showing up for three day event with your Henry and 50 blanks. This was a factual observation and it was not an event where they limited the number of rounds you carried.

So with all of that said. If you choose to make your own blanks, fantastic and we welcome you to the "disease" of making your own. But, if you decide to buy your blanks, we would ask you to consider the Black Squirrel Arsenal & Armory. Our products and services are listed below.

     Respectfully,

     Black Squirrel Arsenal & Armory

Henry Rifle carrier block conversion for short blanks*     $40.00(using your existing parts plus shipping)

This conversion allows your Henry to shoot the shorter blanks listed below, which gives you both a cost advantage, by avoiding the expense of the 5 in 1 blanks, and makes it a true sixteen shooter. The modification consists of a pin mounted into the carrier block's wall and a small channel being cut into the bolt face, so that the bolt can pass over the stop pin. The modifications are not permanent to the rifle, since the modified parts can easily be replaced with new ones. A second "live fire" carrier block is recomended if you choose to also shoot your Henry live. The shipment of the complete rifle is not necessary, only the carrier block and bolt. The cost of this conversion is $40 plus shipping. Discounted if combined with a blanks order. (If we use your existing parts).

Henry 44-40 Short Block Blanks*                          $58.00 per 100 (plus shipping)

(44-40 blanks, box not included)

This brass blank is formed using a .44 magnum case and requires the carrier block conversion listed above. This blank mimics the approximate length of an orginal Henry cartridge which allows your "sixteen shooter" to be a true sixteen shooter. They are loaded with a duplex smokeless and black powder load (no pyrodex) that provides for a very clean burn, with very little fouling, but with all the smoke, smell and crack of black powder. You will not be dissapointed. Your action and chamber will not be fouled with unburned remnants of black powder and will keep you in the fight longer. No more pouring of water into your action to keep it cycling.

Henry 45LC Short Block Blanks*                         $58.00 per 100(plus shipping)

(45 LC blanks, box not included)

This brass blank is formed using a .45 Long Colt case and requires the carrier block conversion listed above.

Added Savings-If you have spent 45LC brass from your live firings you can send them into the Black Squirrel Arsenal & Armory and have them converted into your 45LC Short Block Blank for further savings.

Do not shoot the .44 magnum cases in your .45LC chambered Henry. Yes, they will fit, but it is a dangerous practice and they will split.

Henry 5 in 1 Brass Blanks                                   $78.00 per 100*  (plus shipping)                                            (1,000 minimum order)

For those of you who believe it is blasphemous to modify your Henry the Black Squirrel will offer the brass 5 in 1 blanks. These blanks will consist of the same clean burning powder charge as listed above. The 5 in 1 case is not always available from the distributor and they require that at least 1,000 cases be purchased at a time. So please email first for availability and we most likely will need an order of several hundred if not 1,000 blanks* because of our supplier.

Henry 5 in 1 Plastic Blanks                              $1,000,000 per 100

Our motto is that friends don't let friends shoot plastic. Some guys do and that is their choice. There have been extracation issues with the plastic blanks once the chamber heats up and we have witnessed the extractor ripping through the rim, causing a catastrophic malfunction (failure to extract / failure to feed). Yes, you can clear it eventually, but it will take you out of the fight until you can punch the stuck case out. Sure, you can grab a ram rod, but a .58 ram rod head will not fit down your .44 or .45 barrel and the threaded end may only pop out the primer and get stuck in the primer pocket or it may work. In any case, we don't sell or make the plastic blanks. But if you only want to shoot a handful of blanks at an event, go for it. But then why did you buy the Henry in the first place?

Spencer 56-50 Shotgun Hull Blanks (reloadable)                           $75 per 100, $38 per 50, $8 per 10.........................(plus shipping) OUT OF STOCK

(Spencer 56-50 modified shotgun hull blanks)

Yes, these are a red hull with a brass rim and there is nothing we can do about it. Don't try painting them, it won't work and it will just gum up your Spencer. So if you can get past the red hull, these are the most cost effective blanks out there. Which means they work great, sound great and you get your money's worth. Don't settle for the anemic "snap" of just a shotgun primer.

These are made from a modified 32 ga shotgun hull. They are designed and sized for reproduction Spencers in Taylor's 56-50. They are loaded with black powder and not just a primer. They will sound and smoke like a "real" rifle shot and not just a "snap". These feed and extract smoothly and because our rim is brass, the extractor will not rip through the rim, as seen with some plastic blanks. All seven cartridges will fit into the magazine tube. You won't have to "short load" your magazine as with other commercially available blanks. The blade extractor on some originals may not "grab" the rim effectively. However, some original Spencer owners have modified their blade extractor to remedy this extracation issue.

Remember, as a bonus, these can be reloaded with minimal effort and instructions will be included with the initial purchase.

Spencer 56-50 Brass Blanks (reloadable)                                       $ email for price, because the brass keeps going up.....................(plus shipping)

(Spencer 56-50 brass blanks)

For those of you who do not want the red hull or desire a more "authentic" looking blank for your event or living history. This is the blank for you.

These are made from a heavily modified 8mm Lebel case.

These too can be reloaded, but the ogive (curve) of the case mouth may need to be reformed after each loading, in a press. Field tests have shown that these cases can be loaded, fired and reloaded over ten times. That is significant savings over your crimped brass blanks.
